Georgia’s football dynasty is on the line against Texas

The Georgia football dynasty is on the line this weekend against Texas. As a UGA fan, sometimes it doesn’t feel like the Bulldogs are in the midst of a dynasty. But if you look at things closely, it’s clear that they are.

The days of Alabama dominating the world of college football are over. Even though Georgia is still struggling to beat the Tide, the Bulldogs are currently the who’s who of college football.

Georgia has won two of the last three national championships, and even though Michigan is the defending champion, they haven’t come close to overtaking Georgia as the top seed. However, college football’s top brass, the Georgia football dynasty and the Bulldogs’ realistic hopes of winning another national championship remain at stake this weekend.

In theory, a loss to Texas doesn’t completely ruin Georgia’s season. But let’s be honest, a two-loss regular season doesn’t really scream “Georgia is a dynasty.” Even in this theoretical world, there’s still a good chance UGA makes the College Football Playoff, even after a loss to Texas.

But even if UGA had done it, would we even be confident that they would win it all? I think UGA could win a game or two, but no, I don’t think they would win it all.

1. Michigan cannot repeat as champion

The first thing that needs to happen is that Michigan doesn’t win the national title again this season. A new team that won a national championship two seasons in a row would immediately knock Georgia out of the top spot. Luckily, the Wolverines have already suffered two losses, one more and are eliminated from CFP contention.

2. Win the SEC Championship

The second thing that could happen to keep Georgia’s dynasty alive is that Georgia has to win the SEC Championship. To get to that title game, Texas probably needs to win. Again, one loss wouldn’t completely eliminate them, but two conference losses would be hard to swallow just to get to Atlanta.

3. Come close to winning a national championship

But then we have the national championship, which we already discussed. Georgia would have to go undefeated the rest of the season (if they lose to Texas) to get into the CFP. And as we’ve discussed before, a loss to Texas would make me feel like a national championship is impossible to achieve.

But there’s still a scenario where I think Georgia’s dynasty continues even after a loss to Texas. If Georgia makes it to the national championship game, which would mean winning three playoff games, I think their dynasty would continue even if they don’t win the title game. Anything else would make it difficult to convince anyone outside Athens that Georgia is still a dynasty.

So what is the easiest way for the Georgian dynasty to continue? Beat Texas. A win against the Longhorns would likely move Georgia to No. 2 in the country. They would also likely be the favorite to win a national championship.

So all of these other scenarios are great, but let’s just beat Texas so there’s no debate about whether the Georgia dynasty lives on or not.
