Syracuse University fraternity suspended after disgusting videos

What’s wrong with people?

A fraternity at Syracuse University has been suspended for alleged “abhorrent behavior” that put some of its students in danger.

Disturbing videos posted on social media reached university officials after some went viral.

“I am outraged by the actions seen in these videos and condemn this behavior,” Chancellor Kent Syverud said in a statement.

Immediate suspension and investigation

The university issued an immediate temporary suspension of all Phi Kappa Psi activities. It remains in effect as long as the university conducts a prompt and thorough investigation. “Hazing and related actions that endanger our students constitute a serious violation of both University policy and New York law,” Syverud said.

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) and Community Standards and the Syracuse Police Department are working together to collect evidence and interview all students involved.

Phi Kappa Psi executive director Ron Ransom released a statement after the suspension pledging to work with university officials to identify those responsible and ensure accountability. “Hazing has no place in Phi Kappa Psi or in society, and we remain committed to eliminating it from our organization.”

This is not the first tie the fraternity has been accused of hazing. The Daily Orange reports that Phi Psi was on probation from April 2022 to April 2024 for violating the student code of conduct.

Disturbing videos

A video posted on social media showed two men vomiting on two people on the floor, while another man was tied to a cross with his mouth taped shut. It was claimed that it came from a fraternity in Mississippi, but several people said it actually came from SU. The account has been since then deleted.

Several other videos, which have since been removed, show similar scenes. Throwing up on people, screaming, swearing at people while others stood around drinking beer and cheering.

“While this investigation continues, our priority is to support all affected students. This includes providing affected students with necessary resources and services,” Syverud said.

If anyone has information about the alleged harassment, they are asked to contact Community Standards or DPS.
