The crime

In December 2014, a shocking crime shook the small town of Powderly, Texas.

Annie Lois Sims, a 66-year-old retired teacher from North Lamar, was found dead in her home with multiple gunshot wounds just a week before Christmas.

The main suspects in this heinous act were her own grandson Christian Sims and his girlfriend Ashley Eva Morrison.

Arrest and trial

The young couple, ages 16 and 17, fled the scene and were later arrested at a Motel 6 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma.

They were immediately transported back to Lamar County where they faced charges.

As the trial continued, Sims, who was initially held in a juvenile detention center, faced a hearing to determine whether he would be tried as an adult.

Meanwhile, Ashley Morrison remained in the Lamar County Jail on $250,000 bond.

Plea deals and sentencing

The case saw several twists and turns over the years.

Sims ultimately pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Morrison’s case, however, was a bit more complicated.

Death row inmates convicted of murder give first-hand accounts of their crimes in the Netflix series “I Am A Killer.”

She was initially found guilty by a Smith County jury, but that verdict was later overturned by a Texarkana appeals court, which ordered a new trial.

In November 2019, 22-year-old Morrison pleaded guilty to murder and received a maximum prison sentence of 30 years.

Effects on the Sims

The impact of this tragedy on the Sims family was profound.

During the sentencing, the victim’s husband, Mike Sims, gave a powerful and surprisingly gracious statement.

If you don’t admit that you were with Christian back then, you deserve to die in prison, but one day you will burn in hell for eternity

Despite the pain caused by the loss of his wife, he spoke of forgiveness and urged Morrison to seek redemption through faith.

Mr Sims said: “Last time in Tyler I told you I forgave you and I did,” referring to the statement he gave in the previous trial.

He continued: “I still don’t know how [the murder] happened and whether you were there or not. But I know you were a part of it and equally responsible for it.”

“The last time I spoke to you in Tyler, I didn’t know if you gave your life to Jesus Christ, but [I’ve since heard that] They did it and I pray that it is a decision of the Holy Spirit.

“Trust him with your life, be brave for him, and you will never treat anyone again the way you treated my sweet wife.”

“God will give you a new life and come into your life if you read and pray his word.

“He is our rock, our body fortress, and he can lift you up when you are down, just like he did me.”

“When you see the sun, hear the birds sing, and see the flowers, you will be so filled and know that Jesus is your best friend.”

He added: “When I asked God why, I relied on Philippians 4:7, which tells us of the peace of God that surpasses all understanding. My strong prayer and desire for you is that Christ Jesus will give peace to your heart and mind by renewing your spirit.”

Sims then told Morrison, “When you come out one day, be a light in a dark world and a shining example.”

“Bear your testimony of what Jesus Christ has done for you, and he will give you eternal love.

“Please let him protect you. I wish you all the best.”

His words of compassion and hope for Morrison’s rehabilitation left hardly a dry eye in the courtroom.

The couple’s daughter, Annie Laurie Geer, wasn’t quite as forgiving, telling Morrison: “If you don’t admit that you were with Christian back then, you deserve to die in prison, but one day you will be in prison for all eternity.” Burn in hell.”

I am a murderer

The case is featured in episode two of the fifth season of Netflix’s critically acclaimed true crime docuseries I Am A Killer.

At the start of the show, Morrison says, “The loss of our victim’s life weighs heavily on me.”

“And I don’t think I’ve fully overcome what happened to date.

“But I’m not really a murderer. And it’s a… title I must now carry for the rest of my life.”

The show was released on the streaming platform on October 16, 2024.
