PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. (WPVI) — A new documentary highlights the obstacles women entrepreneurs face.

It says “Show her the money” and a screening will be held in Phoenixville, Chester County on Wednesday, October 16th.

There is evidence that investing in women compared to men is actually more profitable and the returns are even better, yet less than 2% of venture capital goes to women.

The film and the people involved in it want to change this number and the future of female founders.

This is a reality that Jasmine Jones, founder of Myya, knows all too well.

“We help breast cancer survivors be fit for post-mastectomy bras and prostheses,” she said. “Instead of them having to go to a medical supply store or hospital gift shop, they can shop with us and get fit for these items, and the best part is the cost is covered by their health insurance.”

However, when Jones looked for financing, she ran into trouble.

“It was difficult,” she says. Especially since Jones says she was seven months pregnant when she tried to close a funding round.

“Investors tend to invest in products and services that they themselves need or want or would use,” she said. “And not many men in Silicon Valley were shopping for bras and breast forms after a mastectomy.”

Delaware County-based jewelry designer Marlyn Schiff also understands the challenges, but says she was lucky to find support from a banker.

“She has made it her mission to actually work with a lot of women-owned businesses. She hosts events for women-owned businesses. She organizes networking events for them,” she says.

She has contributed to Schiff’s success for 33 years. Her jewelry is now available in 2,000 stores nationally and internationally and she is celebrating the fifth anniversary of her boutique and showroom in Haverford.

Jones says reaching out to female investors helped her grow her business.

“They understood this product very easily. It took no convincing and they believed in the mission and the work we were doing. And when I got to know her, as is captured in the film, the doors began to open,” she says.
