“Desperate Mattel” is releasing a View Master film in theaters

Look, we’ll just go ahead and blame Greta Gerwig for this.

After all, it is Barbie The director explained to the fine folks at toy maker Mattel that demand for the various pieces made of consumer-grade plastic was clearly a billion dollars at the box office. And all it took to make that money from an eager moviegoing audience was a genuinely funny script with a slightly satirical point of view, written by two highly decorated screenwriters, a bevy of incredibly talented actors, several extremely elaborate musical numbers, and a decent quota of the world’s supply bright pink in color and a brand so instantly recognizable that virtually every person on the planet had come into contact with it before the film came out. Why shouldn’t A View Master Movie just as good?

That’s pro diversityin which it is reported that Mattel has now reached agreements with Sony and Escape Artists for a film based on the 3D picture toys, which were first released in 1939. The press release announced that the film would be a “four-quadrant family adventure “ will be, so good news on that front, four-quadrant families!

And look: we can express serious skepticism about how much thought went into all of this – Mattel is also developing films based on it American Girl, Barney, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robotsand damn U.Nso it’s hard not to feel a touch of cynicism about their current, er, “efforts” – but there’s nothing that automatically guarantees one View Master The film would have to be bad. That was one of the big takeaways BarbieAfter all, IP-based films are ultimately human artistic achievements, and they rise or fall depending on how much care and thought goes into them. Damn, it’s possible View Master The movie would look pretty darn cool – a movie that tries to achieve the stereoscopic diorama look of old-school discs would be really fascinating. It’s also possible that it’s total garbage, released into theaters in a desperate effort to squeeze some money out of the nostalgic brains of aging millennials. Either way, we blame Gerwig.
