Jarvis Greer is among those inducted into the Memphis Sports Hall of Fame

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The Memphis Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2024 featured one of Action News 5’s best.

Jarvis Greer, who spent 43 years at the station, including more than 30 years as sports director, was immortalized Wednesday night in the city he called home his entire life.

Known to many simply as “Jarvo,” Greer grew up in Memphis, played football at Memphis State and then launched a legendary broadcasting career in his hometown.

“The emotions are completely out of control, I can’t tell you everything I’m feeling right now because there are so many things I’m going through,” Jarvis said. “I never got into it for awards or anything like that. I started playing sports because I liked sports and it was fun.

Jarvis was presented with his Hall of Fame trophy by his son JJ, making the moment even more special.

“I had a chance to do a job that I enjoyed, and when you get a chance to do something that you enjoy, it’s not like work,” Jarvis said. “And if you’re interested and excited, hopefully people out there will be too.

“And I’m so happy that people like what I got to do and I’m just glad I had the chance to do it.”

Jarvis was among a class full of big names, including Grizzlies icon Zach Randolph, late NFL legend Reggie White (who began his pro career with the Showboats in the 1980s) and Tiger basketball player Andre Turner.

“Man, it’s a big honor,” Randolph said. “Like you said, it’s just a great honor to be inducted into this Hall of Fame and to be there with the other legends, coach (Lionel) Hollins and the other legends, Jerry Lawler.

“I’m just grateful, you know, like I said, this city guy, I love this city, this is my home. You know it’s forever hard, man.”

The timing couldn’t have been better for Turner, who returned to his alma mater this season as part of Penny Hardaway’s staff.

“Oh, absolutely at the top, absolutely at the top,” Turner said of where this award ranks on the list of his favorite awards. “Any time you have the opportunity to be blessed and honored and inducted into some kind of Hall of Fame, it’s an absolute blessing, man.”

His high school classmate at Mitchell University and fellow Memphis basketball player Regina Street was also inducted.

“I’m excited,” Street said of the honor. “I tend to forget that people still remember me. That’s why I’m often surprised when they say, ‘Oh, you’re Regina Street.’ So I’m forever grateful and very honored to be inducted into the Hall of Fame with this special group that we have.”

Other candidates for 2024 include:
