The Kuna neighbor’s fence is destroyed for the third time in a tight corner

KUNA, Idaho – There is more traffic, especially more truck traffic, at the corner of Deer Flat and Steward Road in Kuna. A homeowner is raising safety concerns after she says her fence was destroyed three times by narrow trucks driving around the corner.

  • ACHD says they are looking into a project to widen the shoulder at the corner to make it easier for trucks to turn.

“I live here, my animals live here. It’s not just a race track where people can just wreck it and drive away,” said Karla Taylor, who lives on the corner of Deer Flat and Stewart Road.

She’s fed up after the fence on her property was destroyed a third time – she says sand and gravel trucks drive around corners too closely.

“It’s a question of respect. So it’s very, very difficult for me because I’ve lived here for more than 40 years and it’s only recently that there’s been so much disrespect,” Taylor said.

She tells me that she has spent thousands of dollars repairing her fence that keeps her cows in the pasture. When it was destroyed the second time, they got out and roamed the streets.

“I just feel like more needs to be done on this corner because there will be a bloodbath in the end. One day the cows will come out, you see the traffic, what will happen? It’s going to be a mess, and there will be. “There are all sorts of liability issues here,” Taylor says.

“There are definitely more vehicles than in the past and an increase in trucks. There are significantly more gravel trucks than there used to be,” says Matt Degen, safety engineering manager at ACHD.

He tells me this corner is on their radar. The last time the fence was destroyed, reflective markings were placed on the corner. These have now been mowed down.

“It is possible that with the increase in traffic, even if there is still not much traffic, there is a risk that trucks will no longer have the opportunity to perhaps cross the center line to turn,” says Degen.

I asked Matt if these trucks are allowed on country roads like this. He told me that they don’t usually restrict truck traffic.

“With this in mind, we believe that trucks should be allowed to use the road. Instead of restricting truck access on these roads, we would adapt the infrastructure so that trucks can travel on these roads safely,” explained Degen. “So the next look at this would basically be a more significant project where we would probably look at widening the shoulder. That would allow the vehicles to make that curve.”
