Carle Health is expanding its program with free mammography screenings

BLOOMINGTON (25News Now) – For three years, Carle Health has offered free mammography screenings to more than 50 people on National Mammography Day.

For this year’s commemoration, which takes place on Friday, the health care provider is also offering free health screenings to McLean County, among other locations.

Screenings will take place at the Carle BroMenn Outpatient Center in Bloomington, 3024 E. Empire Street.

A Carle Health breast surgeon, Dr. Matilde Francois, said cancer can be found even when patients don’t feel any lumps.

“Mammograms find breast cancers very small, meaning they find breast cancers that are often smaller than a centimeter,” Francois said. “A centimeter is about the size of a fingertip, so if they’re smaller they’ll find it.”

The annual free mammogram screenings were previously offered by Carle only in Peoria to low-income or uninsured women ages 40 to 64. Some women need these screenings sooner, Francois said.

“Let’s say you had an aunt who was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 45,” she added. “Ultimately, we recommend that women undergo screening mammography if they are 10 years younger than the youngest affected person in their family. “

Carle Health demonstrations will take place on Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the following locations:

Carle BroMenn Outpatient Center, 3024 E. Empire Street in Bloomington.
Carle Health Methodist Diagnostic Center at 112 NE Crescent Avenue in Peoria.
Carle Health Pekin Hospital at 600 S. 13th Street in Pekin.
Carle Health Proctor Hospital at 5409 N. Knoxville Ave in Peoria.

OSF St. Francis will also offer walk-in mammograms and cancer screenings on Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the OSF HealthCare Cancer Institute at 1310 N. Missouri Avenue in Peoria.
