Warner Robins sees a significant drop in crime rates despite population growth

Warner Robins, Ga. (WGXA) – Warner Robins city leaders are optimistic about their efforts to curb crime as the city sees a significant decrease in various types of crimes. According to the Warner Robins Police Department, overall crime rates have decreased in several areas, including arson, assault, burglary, counterfeiting and more.

In addition to these declines, there were also declines in extortion, fraud, gambling and homicide. So far this year, the city has recorded five homicides.

Chief Wayne Fisher said the department responded to 58,247 calls in 2020 — the peak of the pandemic, which he called the “COVID year.” As of September 1st this year, 40,629 calls had already been processed. Over the past four years, Warner Robins’ population has grown to an estimated 85,000 residents. While population growth typically correlates with higher crime rates, Fisher said that wasn’t the case at Warner Robins.

“Crime doesn’t seem to be tied to specific areas of the city,” Fisher said. “We executed a search warrant on Sherman Street, which is considered a low-income part of the city, and a few weeks later we conducted a major drug raid in Lake Joy, a more affluent area.”

Fisher also acknowledged that the police department is currently operating with about 14 fewer officers than it needs, but praised the collaborative efforts of the community and city leadership to maintain safety.

“With the support of the community, our governing body, the mayor and council, and our continued efforts to recruit and retain officers, we are doing well,” he said.

However, Fisher pointed out that while there is an overall decrease in crime, there are also areas of concern. The city has seen an increase in drug crimes, but Fisher explained that increase is due to more targeted investigations and more aggressive law enforcement, rather than a worsening problem.

To continue the dialogue about public safety, Fisher announced the department will hold another town hall meeting at Hebron Fellowship Baptist Church on November 7 at 6:30 p.m.
