The Nevada women’s volleyball team says it won’t play against San Jose State because of a transgender Spartan player

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – The University of Nevada, Reno women’s volleyball team says they won’t play their game against San Jose State because one of the Spartan players is transgender, while the school says the game will go on .

The university said the majority of team members sent a statement to the school on Sunday indicating their intention to forgo the game. ESPN reported the development on Tuesday.

The game is scheduled to take place on October 26th.

The university states that the players’ decision and statement were made independently and without consultation with the school or its athletic department and that their decision does not reflect the university’s position.

“The University and its athletic programs are governed by the Nevada Constitution and Nevada law, which strictly protect equality of rights under the law, and such equality shall not be denied or abridged by this State or any subdivision thereof on the basis of race, color, creed, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, ancestry or national origin,” the school said in a statement.

“The University is also subject to federal law and the rules and regulations of the NCAA and the Mountain West Conference, which include providing competition in an inclusive and supportive environment,” they continued.

UNR says it will continue play as scheduled, but that players can choose not to participate in the game without facing disciplinary action.
