Live-action View Master film in the works from Mattel Films

After the astronomical success of Greta Gerwig BarbieMattel and Sony have their eyes on their next toy project: a film that shines a spotlight on the classic View-Master.

According to a statement from Mattel Films, the View Master film will be a live-action family adventure story. Escape Artists, the production company behind films like The pursuit of happiness And Fencesshould produce.

“View-Master has long been a window into the wonders of the world, inspiring the imagination of children and adults alike,” said Todd Black, one of the Escape Artists producers involved. “Working with Mattel Films gives us the chance to honor this legacy while creating an entirely new adventure for today’s audiences. We can’t wait to bring the spirit of discovery of this treasured toy to the big screen.”

2023 BarbieStarring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, it grossed over a billion dollars at the box office and was nominated for Best Picture. While it’s unlikely that director Greta Gerwig will tackle a sequel any time soon, Mattel has also been working on a possible Polly Pocket film directed by Lena Dunham and starring Lily Collins. However, Dunham has since left the project, so its status remains in limbo.

Elsewhere, a new American Girl Dolls-themed film is still in the works, while a “down-to-earth and dark” Hot Wheels film from acclaimed director JJ Abrams is also in the pipeline.

Abrams isn’t the only director curious about exploring the dark side of beloved children’s possessions. Mattel’s in-development Daniel Kaluuya-directed Barney film has been described as an “A24-esque” film that will be “surrealistic” in the vein of Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze.
