Charlotte 5k raises money to provide a local veteran with a furnished home

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – This weekend the Canopy Housing Foundation is hosting its annual Strides for Shelter 5K.

Year-round, Canopy Housing Foundation in Charlotte strives to address unmet housing needs and advocate for fair and affordable housing standards and practices.

Strides for Shelter 5K will reflect this mission: Race proceeds will fund the construction of a fully furnished one-bedroom, one-bathroom cottage for a homeless veteran through the Home Again Foundation.

The Home Again Foundation is this year’s beneficiary of the race.

Event organizers said Canopy Housing Foundation has donated over $170,000 to seven different organizations through Strides for Shelter since the race began in 2015.

“Doing this for a homeless veteran really means a lot. Do something for veterans who have given so much for us. My grandfather was a veteran, my father-in-law and many friends of mine. “It’s just really special and a great opportunity for real estate agents to show what we can do for our community,” said Dottie Ciarrocchi, co-chair of Strides for Shelter.

This year’s Grand Marshall for the walk is former WBTV chief meteorologist Eric Thomas.

The 5K can also be completed virtually, allowing you to complete your steps at your own pace.

The race will take place on October 19th at 8:30 a.m. at McAlpine Creek Park.
