State reports first flu death this season

RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) – The first person has been reported to have died from the flu in North Carolina, according to state health officials.

According to the Department of Health, a Charlotte-area adult died in the second week of October.

“This is a sad reminder that influenza can be a very serious illness,” said state epidemiologist Zack Moore, MD, MPH. “Preventative measures against influenza and other respiratory illnesses, such as vaccinations, regular handwashing, cough protection and staying home when sick are important to protect you and your family.”

During the last flu season, 319 people died.

According to DHHS, flu vaccines are available at pharmacies, private doctor’s offices and local health departments.

Health officials offer these precautions to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses:

  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based cleaner or disinfectant to prevent spreading viruses to others
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and items that may be contaminated
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue away immediately
  • Stay home if you are sick, except to seek medical attention or get tested, and take steps to avoid spreading the infection to others in your home
  • If possible, live in a room separate from other household members
  • If possible, use a separate bathroom
  • Avoid contact with other household members and pets
  • Personal household items such as cups, towels and utensils may not be shared
  • Wearing a mask around other people
