Doug McDermott is on the move again.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Sacramento Kings signed the veteran forward to a one-year deal on Wednesday.

The move comes two days after the Kings traded forward Jalen McDaniels to the San Antonio Spurs for a 2025 second-round pick.

The Indiana Pacers acquired McDermott via trade from the Spurs as part of a three-team deal that also included the Philadelphia 76ers in February. It was his second stint with Indiana, as he played for the Eastern Conference team for three seasons from 2018-19 to 2020-21.

McDermott has also played for the Chicago Bulls, Oklahoma City Thunder, New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks in a career that dates back to 2014.

Some of his best basketball performances came during his first stint with the Pacers, when he scored a career-best 13.6 points per game in the 2020-21 season after posting a career-best 10 the previous season. Had scored 3 points per game.

That was part of a string of four straight seasons with double-digit scoring averages at Indiana and San Antonio, although he wasn’t the same player in 2023-24.

The Creighton product averaged just 6.0 points in 46 games for the Spurs, then dropped to 4.2 points, 0.7 assists and 0.6 rebounds in 18 games for the Pacers.

Perhaps even more concerning was his outside shooting.

Last season with San Antonio, he still hit 43.9 percent of his three-point attempts, which was even higher than his career average of 41 percent. However, his percentage dropped to just 32.1 with the Pacers, which was a problem for someone who has always been known as a sharpshooter off the court.

A large part of McDermott’s value comes from that shooting and ability to stretch the floor, especially at this point in his career at age 32.

While this was never a signing that would drastically alter Sacramento’s outlook for the 2024-25 season, it would be all the more valuable if McDermott can rediscover his long-range shooting talent after a downturn at the end of last season.
