The Ningbo Open made its debut on the WTA tour in 2023.

The 2024 Ningbo Open will be the second edition of the WTA Tour event. The WTA 500 event took place at the end of September last year. This time the event began on October 14 as it marks the last WTA 500 event of the season in China. While the best players miss the event, the fight for the trophy continues.

Barbora Krejcikova is the top seed this time, followed by Daria Kasatkina and Beatriz Haddad Maia. Paula Badosa and Katie Boulter are also among the event’s top-ranked players. Boulter was involved in a three-hour duel in the opening round last season, losing to Vera Zvonareva.

While last season’s wildcard Ons Jabeur won the event, she will not be able to defend her title this time. This year, Wang Xiyu of China was the wildcard entrant, but was eliminated in the fourth round by Badosa. Only three Chinese players, including Xiyu, had made it into the main draw of the event.

This tournament will see a new player crowned champion this time as Krejcikova has a good chance, even though she hasn’t won a singles match since August. The Czech player also plays doubles with Chinese Taipei’s Chan Hao-ching as they are seeded second. Kasatkina also hopes to continue her form in the Asian swing.

The Russian player reached the final of the Korea Open two weeks ago, but suffered early exits at the China Open and the Wuhan Open. Meanwhile, Badosa had reached the semifinals of the China Open, but lost to Coco Gauff and was able to record important victories again.

The doubles main field is led by Nicole Melichar-Martinez/Ellen Perez. The duo did not have a successful Asian swing.
