Legendary Detroit taco shop sets opening date for new location after fire

DETROIT – One of southwest Detroit’s most well-known taco restaurants will open its new location after a fire in 2022.

Taqueria El Rey, known for its standalone location on Vernor Highway and its popular food trucks, is opening its new location in Mexicantown.

Taqueria El Rey will occupy the former Zocalo space across from Los Galanes.

The taco shop had been operating its food truck in the parking lot for several months. They had also operated a pop-up at Batch Brewing in Corktown.

The new location is scheduled to open on October 18th, with the grand opening celebration scheduled for November 1st.
