The Baltimore Orioles’ young superstar is named to the MLB All-Rookie First Team

After 101 wins last year and their first American League East title since 2014, the Baltimore Orioles finally took a step back in 2024, but the end result was the same: one win in the team’s first playoff series and still none Playoff victory in a decade.

Baltimore had to fight in the home stretch to even make it to the postseason, and one of the main reasons they were able to do that was their sensational rookie outfielder Colton Cowser. After his great first season in the big leagues, Cowser was named to the MLB Pipeline 2024 All-Rookie First Team, where he finds himself in great company.

In Cowser’s first full season in the MLB, he played 153 games and hit a .242 batting average with 24 home runs, tying him with fellow first-team outfielder Jackson Merrill of the Padres for the most in the league as a rookie. Cowser also accounted for 69 RBIs and excelled at every position in the outfield. He was also named a Gold Glove finalist this week for his play in left field. Along with Merrill and the Brewers’ Jackson Chourio, this is a great rookie group of first-team outfielders.

Cowser was selected in the first round with the No. 5 pick by the Orioles in the 2021 MLB Draft. In three seasons at five different levels in the minor leagues, he hit .298 with 38 home runs, 19 of them in his only full season in the minor leagues in 2022 in High A ball, Double A and Triple A.

In Baltimore’s postseason exit, Cowser was relatively disappointing, having only one hit out of seven at-bats in the two games against the Royals that yielded no hits. But Cowser should have plenty of time to establish himself as a player who can perform well in the postseason as the team looks to improve and make a breakthrough next year. If they can do that, Cowser will be a big reason why he is one of the brightest young stars the team has had in a long time.
