Relax, Nobuo Uematsu isn’t done with video game music yet

A recent message from renowned music composer Nobuo Uematsu, who helped promote Fantastic Neo Dimension– the Apple Arcade-exclusive title being re-released for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC – stated: “This is my final project as a game music composer. I hope you pick it up and play. Thank you for your support!”

Naturally, this news prompted much of the internet, myself included, to thank Nobuo Uematsu for everything he has done and ask him to reconsider. However, it turned out that this message was a mistake.

In response to all the messages, Nobuo Uematsu replied, “Wait, wait, wait! Calm down everyone! There seems to be a misunderstanding, but I won’t retire from video game music! I’m just going to cut back on my work a little bit because I want to have more time to make the music that I really want to make. Although it would be difficult for me to undertake a full game soundtrack due to the time commitment, I still plan to work on projects such as composing a theme song. So we are waiting for your offers at Nobuo Uematsu con TIKI!”

The good news is that Nobuo Uematsu isn’t giving up on video game music entirely. Instead, he withdraws and focuses on creating his own music. This is something we’ve seen with several video game composers who have invested so much time into the industry. While Uematsu is best known for his work on Final Fantasy Series he has also composed music for other games including Blue dragon, Lost OdysseyAnd The final storyto name just a few.

It’s definitely a relief that he’s not leaving, and I look forward to hearing what masterpieces he’ll create next. Ironically, this isn’t the first time he’s taken a break from composing video game music. He did this back in 2018, citing the need for downtime due to his hectic schedule. Maybe it’s just more of the same. Plus, considering how long Uematsu has been into video game music since 1985, I doubt he could ever really stop.
