One-legged pants: Is this the most impractical fashion trend of all time? | Women’s trousers

Name: One-leg pants.

Age: Six years old, but only recently popular.

Look: About half are defective.

When you say one-legged pants, do you actually mean pants with only one leg? Exactly that, yes.

Where would you ever wear something like that? Mostly on the catwalk. One-legged trousers have been featured in recent fashion shows from Bottega Veneta, Coperni and Louis Vuitton, among others.

It must be impossible to enter. You don’t put both legs in the same hole.

So what happens to the leftover leg? It lies outside the trouser frame, exposed.

Sorry, whose idea was that? According to Harper’s Bazaar, the first one-legged pants may have been created in 2018 by designer Sarah Aphrodite.

And people thought it was a good idea? To be honest, they barely paid attention to it. But then the Korean fashion label Pushbutton launched its one-legged jeans in 2019.

One-legged Jeans? Apparently they were a natural progression from Ukrainian label Ksenia Schnaider’s half-skinny, half-flared jeans.

There’s nothing natural about that. What good is half a pair of pants? Some say it’s all about asymmetry.

It’s about as asymmetrical as pants can get, I thinkI would imagine. Others say it’s part of a larger trend toward runway chaos.

Or you feel the urge to walk around looking like you’ve just been attacked by a police dog. The look certainly presents challenges. NSS Magazine says: “This style of trousers does not appear to be poised for major commercial success – largely due to the complete impracticality of the style.”

Why bother making something that no normal person would ever buy? Have you ever been to a fashion show? Designers are always looking for ways to turn conventions on their head.

By everyone doing that the same thing at the same time? Admittedly, this particular trend has a bit of a bandwagon feel to it.

What’s next? A one-sleeved jacket? Technically, this look came and went with the rise of one-sleeved style—wearing the two-sleeved jacket on just one arm—which was very 2016.

How about going out with just one shoe? This might be difficult, but Rick Owens’ spring/summer show featured mismatched boots.

Fingerless gloves? They are already a thing.

Topless hats? What else is a visor?

Handbags without bottoms? Hmmm. Do you have any drawings?

Say: “We all only put our trousers on one leg at a time – some of us only stop halfway to challenge traditional silhouettes.”

Don’t say: “Have you seen the Emperor’s new legless pants?” They look amazing.”
