Film review: Sex farce fails in “Advanced Chemistry”

“Advanced Chemistry” is a sexual farce not to be confused with “romantic comedy” as a genre, although this distinction has rarely been applied to a “PG” film.

Chunky, shy and tame to the point of chastity, it’s a boring detour into biochemistry, “monogamous attraction” via hypodermic needle, air guitar as an art form and “total facial nudity”.

This is as romantic and sexy as this one relationship – with a germaphobe and at the center of the plot – can get.

Samba Schütte And Kiaran Deol Play chemistry students under the guidance of an impatient mentor (Iqbal Theba).

Allen (Schutte) is an unfortunate doormat when it comes to love. He always loses his potential bar skills to his aggressive, lesbian best friend. The ladies – even the straight ones – can’t get enough of Marsha, Marsha Marsha (Chaunte Wayans).

Allen and Lisa (Deol) compete for that one spot in their university’s program. He is working on “Bondo,” a drug designed to encourage chemical loyalty to a loved one, just as voles practice monogamy. Lisa’s “Lixi” promises better orgasms for women.

Because Marsha is “a con artist from a long line of con artists,” she begs to be a human test subject for Bondo. In this way, Allen plunges himself into a world of misdirected needles that create irresistible stimuli – in which he has little interest.

But Lisa might be different, a co-conspirator in his illegal “test” case and a germaphobe repelled by the idea of physical contact, let alone physical attraction.

Every now and then, when this or that person in the larger plot is intentionally or accidentally injected, they must keep Allen’s actions a secret from crazy, over-committed security officer Nancy (T’Keyah Crystal Keymah)who comes across like a zealous “security” Nazi.

Director Etana Jacobson keeps the tone light and crazy. The players do their best to take it to the extreme. But the pacing is flat, few of the jokes even come close, and the “biggest” of the cast just doesn’t get us there.

“Advanced Chemistry” has problems with the fundamentals.
