Paranormal activity took the world by storm in 2007. On the surface it’s a very simple found footage film with unknown actors in one location, but these were the ingredients for a truly terrifying cinematic experience. It was made on a small budget of $215,000 and grossed a whopping $194 million at the box office, making it one of the most successful horror films of all time. It still holds up 17 years after its release and is a must-watch for anyone in need of a good scare.

Of course, it’s the realism that makes this film so terrifying. The actors mostly improvised and we spend most of the film watching the footage in the middle of the night Wait for something to happen. It’s still just as great as the first time I saw it.

As the best entry into Edgar Wright’s Cornetto Trilogy (I said what I said), this Zom-rom-com is perfect for any Halloween movie night. It’s funny, it’s scary, it’s deeply sad at times, it’s everything you could want from a zombie movie. Like many of Wright’s works, it’s quotable, immaculately filmed and manages to balance classic British humor with the impending doom of the apocalypse. Hot fuzz And The end of the world Of course both are worth your time, Shaun of the Dead will always have the upper hand for me.

Putting a very mediocre man in the middle of a zombie outbreak where he has to sort out his crumbling relationships and keep everyone alive is extremely entertaining, especially when his plan largely boils down to grabbing a pint and waiting it out . I mean, what else do you do?

The Babadook is a truly impressive directorial debut. There’s a lot of pressure on a filmmaker when it comes to introducing their first work to the world, and Jennifer Kent stunned audiences with her portrayal of parenthood, grief and madness. With beautiful (and creepy) stop-motion animation and practical effects, this film is as haunting as it is poignant. Something about seeing disturbing scenes in a pop-up children’s book is sure to stay with you for a while.

Essie Davis is great as a struggling mother trying to cope with the loss of her husband while also struggling to connect with her young son, who is showing signs of neurodivergence. It’s a deeply moving horror and truly something special.

I love a good slasher comedy. Scream is one of my favorite horror films of all time because of its self-awareness and willingness to make a, let’s face it, sometimes silly genre fun. Absolutely stunning takes a similar approach and stars the brilliant Kiernan Shipka, best known for her starring role in Netflix Chilling adventures of Sabrina.

The horror genre just loves using numbers (you know, 666, 13, etc.), but this is all about 16. The antagonist in Absolutely stunning is referred to as the “Sweet 16 Killer,” where they stab their victims 16 times on the nights of their 16th birthdays. Is it kind of silly? Yes. Is it also enormously entertaining? Also yes!
