Technical News

Cybersecurity experts have found over 200 apps that are malicious and pose a serious threat to your device. What should you do?

There are some hidden malicious apps in your Google Play Store apps that can pose a threat to your phone! According to the latest report from Zscaler, an IT security company, over 200 malicious apps were discovered on Google Play, posing a serious threat to millions of users between June 2023 and April 2024. Another shocking aspect is that these apps have a combined total of almost eight million downloads, which can put personal data at risk.

These apps primarily fall into several categories of malware, most notably Joker, Adware, Facestealer, Coper and Banking Trojans, according to a report by Bleeping Computer. Despite Google’s continued efforts to remove malicious apps, these threats often evade detection through various methods. Hackers use various tactics such as versioning, where updated versions of an app inject malware after initial approval.

Will you be affected?

The Zscaler report indicates a huge increase in mobile malware, particularly spyware, which has increased by 101 percent year-on-year. Worryingly, the most affected regions include the United States and India. “This includes Anatsa, a well-known Android banking malware that uses PDF and QR code readers to spread malware and has targeted more than 650 financial institutions,” the report continued. Interestingly, Zscaler’s analysis shows that almost half of the malicious apps detected were found in categories such as tools, personalization and lifestyle.

Google implements several security measures to protect users from malicious apps. Features like Google Play Protect scan applications at the time of installation and periodically thereafter. This system helps detect malicious behavior and can automatically remove malicious apps.

According to Google, when malicious applications are detected, users will receive notifications that allow them to uninstall or disable the apps. However, users must also take personal responsibility by checking app permissions and reading user reviews before downloading.

Scam apps in the Google Play Store: How to stay safe

Here are some tips to minimize your risk when using the Google Play Store:

  1. Always check user feedback to identify potential issues or malicious behavior. Also, read the developer’s information carefully before downloading an app.
  2. Additionally, beware of apps that request excessive permissions that don’t match their actual use case.
  3. Make sure Google Play Protect is enabled on your device for real-time protection.
  4. Update your apps and device software regularly to benefit from the latest security patches.
