A teaser trailer for Rumors offers a disturbing first look at Cate Blanchett’s upcoming horror-comedy, with an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Screen rant interviewed Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson about Rumors. They revealed the inspiration behind the film and showed what the big brain was made of. The filmmakers also talked about working with Cate Blanchett and how the entire cast came together after signing on.

The inspiration behind rumors is how frustrating and difficult it is to get anything done in a group

“Eventually those two strands, us sitting in a room trying to think of ideas and the G7 on TV, came together naturally and we knew what we had to do next.”

Screen Rant: What was the inspiration for this film?

Evan Johnson: Well, it’s my fault for writing a lot of it, but the idea came about when we were sitting in a room together for three years observing our own group dynamics and how frustrating and difficult it is to get anything done in a group . While we’re doing that, sometimes the news is on, and every year there’s the G7 summit, and we watch it, and we enjoy it. It’s funny to see these characters walking around or having dinner together and it would make us laugh. At some point these two strands, us sitting in a room trying to think of ideas and the G7 summit on TV, came together naturally and we knew what we had to do next.

The giant brain is made of Styrofoam and latex

Screen Rant: What is the giant brain made of?

Galen Johnson: A Styrofoam base and then some latex and then some flammable material on top so we can light it.

Guy Maddin: Yes. It has an incredible carbon footprint. Huge brain size. Terrible. Excuse me. It’s really tempting to touch it. If you were there in person, you wouldn’t be able to resist.

The cast all came together after Cate Blanchett was signed

“We made our first choice across the board.”

Screen Rant: This is such an incredible cast. Can you talk to us about bringing them all?

Guy Maddin: They were just starting out when we first got Roy Dupuis, the part was written for him, the Prime Minister of Canada. When Cate Blanchett joined the cast, our wish list was checked off. It was amazing. You get what you get when Cate is involved in your project.

Evan Johnson: There’s nothing more fun. The best part of the process is having Cate and then looking around the world and being like, “You’re going to be in our movie, you’re going to be in our movie, and everyone’s doing it.”

Guy Maddin: We made our first choice across the board.

Rumor has it many different genres are being “softly lumped together”

“It’s a soap opera, but we had to admit it’s a comedy. We even had to admit that it was a satire.”

Screen Rant: How would you describe this film to someone who knows nothing about it?

Guy Maddin: It depends who it is. If it’s my brother-in-law, an accountant, it’s a movie about the G7 summit, and if it’s someone who’s more into horror movies or something like that, then I’d say it’s about reanimated bog mummies or something because it’s a A lot of it is genres gently massaged together with a carefree insouciance.

Galen Johnson: We tailor it to the person being asked.

Evan Johnson: It’s a soap opera, but we have to admit it’s a comedy. We even had to admit that it was a satire.

Guy Maddin: I don’t think so either. I was shocked when people started laughing at the premiere.

Screen Rant: There are many different genres in this film. How do you find balance?

Guy Maddin: It’s probably just instincts. You just go along with writing and go, that’s enough for now. It’s just kind of a gut feeling. You just don’t want to be perceived as taking yourself seriously for more than two-thirds or half a page. And then it’s just a little bit of that. It’s probably like improvising a dish in the kitchen or something like that.

Evan Johnson: When I read or watch a movie I like to be surprised, especially with something that I find very funny and maybe silly, I like to be suddenly surprised by something. A tonal change into something with deep feeling. It’s difficult to pull off, but we tried.
