Video shows Georgians turning out to vote in record numbers

A video shared on social media shows people in Georgia lining up for early voting on Tuesday as polls open in the state.

The clip was filmed in DeKalb County, which includes part of the city of Atlanta, according to Nnamdi Egwuonwu, a 2024 NBC embedded campaigner who apparently first posted the video on X. The video included the caption “Voters.” Enthusiasm appears to be high on the first day of early voting here in battleground Georgia. Look at the *very long* line at a voting precinct in DeKalb County.

Egwuonwu’s upload was viewed over 500,000 times and shared by over 2,000 people. Around the same time, it was also posted on TikTok by an account called @ohsorandom1977, which posts pro-Kamala Harris political clips, where it received nearly 380,000 views.

Many social media users who reposted the clip expressed the view that voting so early in Georgia would benefit Harris. One X user, Leslie Himes, wrote: “These voters in Georgia are about to make history by voting #Harris_Walz2024. You are definitely not voting for Trump!!!”

The battleground state opened polls for early voting on Oct. 15 and will be open through Nov. 1. The state has already broken records with 328,000 votes cast – more than double the record number in the last election, when 187,973 votes were cast in one day in the state.

A sign indicates early voting has begun in Georgia ahead of the 2024 presidential election. A video that went viral on X and TikTok showed long lines of voters waiting to cast their ballots earlier this year…

While early and mail-in voting is typically associated with Democrats, the race for the White House in Georgia remains close, with polling aggregator FiveThirtyEight’s average of national polls showing Trump leading Harris by one point as of Oct. 15.

Political scientist Steve Schier said this previously Newsweek“The Atlanta area favors Harris, but rural Georgia is Trump country.”

Joe Biden won Georgia in 2020, becoming the first Democrat to do so since 1992.

According to the University of Florida’s Election Lab, 5,800,325 people voted early statewide as of October 15.

The tracker found that 52 percent of those early votes were cast by Democrats and 29.7 percent by Republicans. The majority of votes were cast by people over 65 years old.

Early voting, which gained traction in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is offered in 47 states, with the three states without early voting being Alabama, Mississippi and New Hampshire.

Early voting in person or by mail has become increasingly popular, with 69.2 percent of voters casting their ballots at the start of the 2020 election.
