How to watch GVSU football vs. Saginaw Valley State in Week 8

How to watch GVSU football vs. Saginaw Valley State in Week 8

Haters will hate. It’s lonely at the top. Only the strong survive.

How many other clichés could be used to describe how Grand Valley State and Ferris State have dominated the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in recent years, or how the other teams in the conference must feel about it?

The next team on GVSU’s schedule has quietly returned to contention in the GLIAC and will once again have the opportunity to defeat one of the giants for a potential season-defining win.

GVSU and Saginaw Valley State will meet Saturday at Harvey Randall Wickes Memorial Stadium in University Center, Michigan for the next edition of the storied Battle of the Valleys. It is also SVSU’s home game in 2024.

Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time, live on FloFootball.

The long-standing rivalry between GVSU and SVSU began in 1975, but was somewhat one-sided. Grand Valley State leads the series, which includes four playoff games, 41-11.

Grand Valley State has won the last 11 editions of the Battle of the Valleys, including a 55-14 loss in 2023. The last time SVSU won the battle was a 55-52 upset in 2012.

A winning streak for Saginaw Valley State was followed by some difficult seasons, but the Cardinals have been on the rise since returning from the coronavirus-canceled 2020 campaign.

In each of the last three seasons, SVSU has suffered three losses in GLIAC play, with two each coming at the hands of GVSU and Ferris State.

Heading into this week’s Battle of the Valleys, all three teams are tied at the top of the conference standings at 2-0. Yes, it’s early days, but the next two weeks could see the 2024 GLIAC title decided as GVSU faces SVSU and Ferris State in consecutive weeks.

Saginaw Valley State is one of six teams not named GVSU or Ferris State that have won all or part of the GLIAC title since the conference began in 1999. The last time the Cardinals lifted the trophy was 2003. The only time anyone other than GVSU or Ferris State did so was Ashland in 2017.

Grand Valley State enters this week’s match with a 6-0 overall record and a 49-17 win over Northern Michigan. SVSU is 5-1 after defeating GLIAC newcomer Roosevelt 27-14 on Saturday.

Do the Cardinals finally have enough firepower to get past the Lakers and have a legitimate claim to the conference title?
