The cool air continues, but the warm trend is on its way

After a few cool mornings, the weather looks completely dry over the next few days, with a pleasant warming trend. But we have to get through this cold weather first. We have frost forecast for tonight and perhaps even again on Thursday night, with the core of cold air definitely staying with us over the next 24 hours.

The reason for the cold is a sharp drop in the jet stream, which has been sending cooler-than-average air to the Northeast in recent days. Temperatures this time of year are typically in the low to mid 60s and we are about 10 degrees below that. The good news? Temperatures will recover and rise to more average levels and eventually above average starting Friday and into the weekend – as well as the first few days of next week.

High pressure will continue to prevail over the next seven days; This also means a lack of rainfall. This gives you a good opportunity to do some winter prep work, be it painting or sealing the windows or slowly planting the garden – the weather will cooperate.

New England will remain mostly dry today with more sunshine than cloud cover.Boston Globe

Today is the first day that the sun sets before 6 p.m. We don’t get many sunsets in the 5 o’clock hour because just after Halloween, on November 3rd, we set the clocks back an hour, which shifts daylight to the morning from the afternoon. At this time the sunsets move into the 4 o’clock hour. Today is also the last day with 11 hours of daylight between sunrise and sunset. From tomorrow we will have less. Once daylight hours drop below 10 hours, most of your plants will stop responding and you still have a few weeks to plant some grass seed before it is unlikely to germinate.

Southern New England: Look for isolated frost in some areas this morning, followed by sunshine and temperatures in the low to mid 50s in the afternoon. It will be cold overnight, with temperatures reaching 30°C in many places.

Western fair: Expect lots of sunshine today with afternoon temperatures in the low to mid 50s and relatively light winds. It will be cold overnight, with a slow weakening trend from tomorrow.

Cape and Islands: This afternoon you can expect temperatures to reach up to 50° under mostly sunny skies and a light northwest breeze. Tonight temperatures will drop to just under 40 degrees, with some frost off the water.

Northern New England: Many areas will hold highs in the 40s today before reaching the 60s on Friday.
