Goodbye vehicle inspections in Texas

If you are a Texas resident, this news will be of interest to you. As you may already know, we are required to subject our vehicles to a safety inspection once a year, but there are vehicles that are exempt from this inspection.

Which vehicles can skip inspection?

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, cars purchased within the last two years (i.e. this year) are not required to complete the gas emissions test.

Motorcycles and diesel vehicles follow the same path, which can also skip these annual tests.

How long does the inspection take?

A complete inspection takes between 20 and 30 minutes. This involves checking whether the vehicles meet state safety standards and also the requirements regarding pollutant emissions.

What aspects does this inspection include:

  1. Checking the brake system
  2. Operation of the front and rear lights as well as the position lights.
  3. Proper operation of the windshield wipers for good visibility in the rain.
  4. The condition of the mirrors.
  5. Checking the exhaust system that may produce harmful emissions.
  6. Condition of the tires.
  7. Suspension of the vehicle
  8. Correct functioning of the seat belts
  9. The steering of the vehicle.
  10. The windows and the windshield.
  11. The serial number.

When will inspection be abolished in Texas?

The Texas Department of Public Safety has already announced that starting January 1, 2025, non-commercial vehicles (so-called personal or personal vehicles) will no longer be required to undergo a safety inspection before registration.

It is stipulated that starting next year, these vehicles will be subject to an inspection program replacement fee, with $7.50 payable at the time of registration of the vehicle with the vehicle authority.

In contrast, new vehicles purchased in Texas that have not previously been registered in the state or elsewhere in the United States must pay a $16.75 replacement fee that only covers them for two years.

Tips for drivers

If you live in an area where emissions testing is still mandatory, it is important to be aware of testing dates and locations. Remember that failure to comply may result in delays in your registration or even delays.

Even if you no longer have to take the test, we ask you to keep your vehicle in optimal condition, both for your own safety and for the safety of all road users. For this reason, it is important to regularly check the brakes, lights and tire pressure, as detecting a fault in a timely manner can avoid serious consequences.

At the same time, check the registration deadlines and ensure that your vehicle complies with the new regulations. However, do not forget that there are still districts where emissions tests are carried out and failure to do so can result in a fine.

Finally, to avoid penalties, go to your mechanic to carry out general safety checks on your vehicle. Remember that this is not about saving, but about your safety. Don’t forget to keep documentation of past inspections! In the event you sell your vehicle or move to another state, these can be crucial.

Remember that a well-maintained car will prevent future surprises. Don’t wait for a small problem to become a major repair! Stay up to date on dates and ensure you meet local requirements to avoid delays in your registration. Make sure your vehicle is ready for any road. Safe driving is everyone’s responsibility.
