A Texas congressional candidate says someone is stealing her campaign signs

HOUSTON – Damaging, stealing or vandalizing campaign signs is a crime, regardless of whether you agree with the candidate or not.

KPRC 2 has covered the issue on numerous occasions and with the 2024 election just three weeks away, emotions appear to be at an all-time high.

Melissa McDonough, a candidate for Texas’ 38th Congressional District, said she has to replace several of her signs.

“You’re talking about three signs here, three signs there, and you have to keep going back and redoing those signs,” McDonough said.

McDonough said each sign costs about $30 to $40 each, but it’s not necessarily the money she’s worried about.

“It’s just silly, that’s not what we need to do now. We must defend democracy, cast your vote, speak out,” she said.

McDonough told KPRC 2 that she notified law enforcement about the stolen signs.

Law enforcement said anyone caught damaging someone’s property will face criminal charges of negligent bodily harm.

Stealing a sign could be a Class C misdemeanor, and penalties can range from $500 to $2,000.
