Monadnock Ledger Transcript – Letter: What are you thinking about?

“Think while it’s still legal,” reads the text on a political sign on a local street. I can’t say what the person in this house is thinking, but their sign has got me thinking about the upcoming election and the decisions I have to make for national, state and local offices.

Here’s what I’m thinking about. I am thinking of leaders who choose knowledgeable advisors with knowledge and experience to support policies and decisions that support economic policies that directly address the needs of the middle class, with the goal of strengthening the stability of our economy. I’m thinking of leaders who develop policy plans to address important issues like health care, housing, child care, and education, and who believe that government should provide assistance during natural disasters (like the recent hurricane) and in times of need.

I think of leaders who bring calm to decision-making, have respect in their interactions with one another, who understand the value of different perspectives and work to create new solutions to existing problems. When my kids were little, they often wanted to know if I voted for “the winner.” I would answer that I voted for the person who I thought would do the best job. This November I will be voting for Democratic candidates at the local, state and national levels. I ask you to consider your decisions so that you can justify who you voted for and why. What will you tell the children of the future about your choice?
