Over 48 million watch her dad’s epic fail during the “I gasped” TikTok trend

The “upside-down lifting” TikTok trend has taken social media by storm, but not every attempt goes as planned, as shown by a viral clip that racked up a staggering 48.8 million views.

This trend typically involves two people, with one person lifting the other upside down, often as part of a playful or fitness-related stunt. In this challenge, couples typically attempt to hold or balance each other in various upside-down positions, such as lifting their partner by the waist.

In this case, Mary Hutchinson’s boyfriend attempted the challenge with her father.

Since then, they’ve become a viral sensation for all the wrong – yet hilarious – reasons. During the lift, shared by @maryhutchison, the father’s legs flew into the air, causing both men to fall to the ground together. Luckily, neither of them were hurt and they were able to laugh about it – as did the millions of viewers who found the moment equally amusing. Since its release on October 11, the clip has garnered 5.9 million likes.

The trend is based on Jack Johnson’s 2006 hit “Upside Down” and was widely adopted on TikTok. The hashtag #upsidedown received 394,000 views and 4,000 posts in the US last week alone

According to data from the TikTok Creative Center, 67 percent of those participating in this trend belong to Generation Z aged 18 to 24, while only 11 percent of participants are over 35 years old. From Hutchinson’s video, it’s easy to see why the older generation might shy away from this physically demanding – and sometimes comical – challenge.

So far, the video has received more than 18,000 comments.

“The way I GASPED,” said one commenter with over 303,000 likes.

“He really turned the ENTIRE thing on its head,” said another. A third commenter wrote: “Didn’t he know he wasn’t meant to go head to head with him?”

“What brings you to the emergency room today??” joked a fourth user, and a fifth warned: “Sir, this is not WWE.”

Hutchinson has since shared another clip that quickly went viral, racking up over 340,000 views in just 24 hours. This time the video is combined with audio recordings from American actor and wrestler John Cena, adding a humorous touch. In the footage, the father can be seen hanging upside down, and within just three seconds both he and his friend are on the ground. Luckily, the father’s quick reflexes saved him from a head injury as he managed to lower his hands just in time.

“The most perfect ‘upside-down’ yet,” commented one user, while others humorously blamed the mishap on their friend’s socks.

“Socks were a mistake,” one person remarked, pointing out that the boyfriend lacked additional support for support.

“So glad you’re doing well!! The other one.” [point of view] “It looked more serious,” said one woman, relieved that the outcome wasn’t as bad as it first seemed.
