In perhaps one of the most bizarre examples of “video game remake censorship” in the entire history of the medium, leaked footage has revealed that Sega covered up Rouge the Bat’s bare back – while simultaneously taking no action against Amy Rose for sporting reasons same look – in their coming Sonic X Shadow generations.

This design change for the winged jewel thief was confirmed just days before the official release date of the “updated remake,” as the game was released early and in full online.

A number of enthusiastic fans took advantage of this leak and voluntarily jumped on it Sonic X Shadow Generations‘ content, introducing you to everything the game has to offer – including full cutscenes.

And in one of those cutscenes, several fans, including Twitter user @krack932, discovered that the original was once there generations depicted Rouge with a bare back, as seen in all of her appearances since her introduction in Sonic Adventure 2 and originally included in her design to both emphasize her character as a “femme fatale cat burglar” and to allow her free use of her wings, in her final appearance her leotard was pulled down so much that it completely covered that very area.

Additionally, the same design change was also applied to Rouge’s appearance in the tie-in anime series currently airing on YouTube. Sonic x Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings.

What’s notable is that according to her portrayal in the series, although her back is now covered, her shoulder line is still exposed (although this small detail still doesn’t help explain how she can still use her wings through her clothing) .

Although the idea of having Rouge show off lots of “suggestive” skin was apparently deemed too daring by Sega, strangely the company did so not Give Amy Rose the same attention.

As pointed out by another Twitter user @bullniku, in Sonic X Shadow GenerationsThe pink hedgehog continues to wear the standard “open back red dress” that he has been wearing since his jump into the 3D world in the first part Sonic Adventure.

To that end, while SEGA has not yet officially addressed its censorship of Rouge or the discrepancy in its treatment of her and Amy (and who knows if it ever will), current speculation suggests that the Jewel Thief received this treatment and not the rightful bearer of the Piko-Piko Hammer because, simply put, her character is intentionally and inherently “sexier” than that of her younger friend.

Unfortunately, such “remake censorship” is not uncommon at Sega.

After its release earlier this year Reload Persona 3as developed by Sega subsidiary Atlus, has completely removed and replaced an entire social encounter in which the player’s group discovers that Junpei has hit on a male-to-female transgender woman, ostensibly because the content in was handled primarily for purposes of humor.

In ReloadInstead, Junpei is shocked to discover that the sun-kissed woman he’s been hitting on isn’t a transsexual, but rather an over-the-top conspiracy theorist.

Ultimately, said censorship is confirmed Sonic X Shadows GenerationsIt remains to be seen whether this change to Rouge’s design is temporary or in keeping with her new standard.

In the meantime, the game itself is scheduled to officially begin the warping timeline on October 24, 2024.
