The NY Islanders get their first win of the season when Patrick Roy returns to Colorado

HOW IT HAPPENED

The NY Islanders maintained the intensity from the third period of their game against the Dallas Stars, entering a difficult environment in Colorado and coming away with two points. After conceding a goal just over a minute into the game, the Islanders scored six goals of their own and won 6-2. Brock Nelson scored his first two goals of the season, with Anthony Duclair, Anders Lee, Kyle Palmieri and Mat Barzal also scoring.

WHAT WENT RIGHT

The Islanders woke up offensively after being beaten in Dallas, but the story of the night was Ilya Sorokin in his first game back from offseason back surgery. After allowing an early goal through no fault of his own, Sorokin remained undeterred, stopping 32 of 34 shots. He made some timely saves and looked like the Sorokin of old.

WHAT WENT WRONG

Although it wasn’t officially a power play goal, the Avs scored seconds after Max Tsyplakov was released from the penalty box. Technically the Islanders converted both penalties, but the short PK has to be better, even though Brock Nelson scored a shorthanded goal.

Tsyplakov has been strong in his first two games, but his unwillingness to get the puck down low at times is something Patrick Roy wants to fix. He made a backhand pass from the boards along the blue line toward the middle of the ice that resulted in a Nelson goal but could have easily become a breakaway in Colorado’s favor.

Game statistics

Almost everyone got in on the action tonight as 12 of the 18 skaters scored a point, with Nelson being the only player to score multiple points on the night.

SOCIAL MEDIA MOMENT OF THE MATCH

It wasn’t a video montage, but the cameras in Colorado panned to Patrick Roy during the first TV timeout as the crowd at Ball Arena erupted in cheers for their former player and coach.

WHAT’S NEXT

The Islanders wrapped up their road trip on Thursday against the St. Louis Blues. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
