We are all used to hearing about big money in politics. Now it seems like a lot of money has flowed into San Juan County politics. I first received a large, glossy real estate advertising style postcard from the O’Day campaign. This was followed by an even glossier two-page flyer for Stephanie O’Day. Then there were the quarter-page ads in the Journal. This led me to question where the money came from. The answer was revealing. Thanks to the San Juan Islander, I was able to see that the majority of donations to O’Day’s campaign, 82%, came from people who didn’t live on the island. Only 18% of donations to Stephanie O’DAy’s campaign, which included her own contributions, came from Islanders. Stephanie O’DAy’s campaign slogan is “Protecting the island’s way of life.” Money tells a different story. I hope the islanders don’t fall for glossy advertising financed with foreign money.
