Kathy Bates, 76, says she “burst into tears” during the Emmys fitting after losing 100 pounds

Kathy Bates has lost a staggering 100 pounds in recent years and has now revealed how her health journey left her “in tears” when she managed to fit into a Giorgio Armani dress for the 2024 Emmys.

The actress returning to the big screen in the new CBS show MatlockShe revealed that while trying on dresses with a friend, the couple “burst into tears because everything I came out in just looked exquisite.”

In conversation with PeopleShe added that her red carpet experience was “so different” than any she’s had in the past, sharing that “the red carpet pictures were so different than any pictures I’ve ever taken on had done on a red carpet”.

“I just felt so relaxed and ready. I knew I felt great and looked great… It was a beautiful evening. “That evening was really special,” she said.

The 76-year-old previously revealed she had lost weight after being diagnosed with lymphedema, which was a result of the double mastectomy she underwent after battling breast cancer.

She battled cancer twice, first being diagnosed with stage one ovarian cancer in 2003 and again in 2012 when doctors found a tumor in her left breast, which led to a mastectomy.

She was also facing a diagnosis of diabetes and she didn’t want that to become a reality and focused on exercise, diet and mental health to make the changes.

“This is the best health I’ve had in years and I’m so grateful – it’s a miracle,” she said in 2019 after losing 60 pounds, revealing that she had learned new behaviors that helped her to control their portions: “After eating for 20 to 30 minutes, you experience an involuntary sigh. It’s the communication between your stomach and brain that tells you [you’ve] I’ve had enough… and I found that if you listen to that sigh and push away the plate for just five minutes, you’ll realize that you’re satisfied and don’t need to eat anymore.”

In the years that followed, she continued to change her lifestyle, adding in the new interview that she lost her last 20 pounds using Ozempic.

“There was a lot of talk about how I was only able to do this because of Ozempic,” she said, stressing that it was important for her to “make it clear to people out there that this was hard work for me, especially during the pandemic. “.

Kathy has had a career spanning 55 years, winning an Oscar, two Emmy Awards and two Golden Globes for her 1990 thriller Misery. She also has an acclaimed theater career with two Tony nominations.
