Today (October 14, 2024), Chanel announced that Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi are the new faces of Chanel No.5 with a new campaign film from Italian director Luca Guadagnino (Call me by your name, challenger, queer).

Filmed and named in California See you at 5 o’clockThe film features Robbie and Elordi in a romantic rendezvous against the backdrop of the setting sun of Big Sur.

The narrative arc of See you at 5 o’clock begins with the producer and title star of Barbie Sending a message to Elordi (known for her groundbreaking roles in Emerald Fennells). Salt burn and Sofia Coppola Priscilla) invites him to do so Meet her at 5 p.m.

Robbie dabs a touch of Chanel No.5 on her neck before the two Australian actors jump into their respective modes of transport – a silver sports car and a motorcycle – and head towards each other. A mix-up at the agreed location ultimately means that the rendezvous doesn’t take place and the film ends with a foreboding ending as Robbie takes a carefree swim in the sea. “Wearing perfume can create a mood and it stays there,” she tells Wallpaper*. “Someone can leave the room and still be there.”

Chanel No.5 was created by Ernest Beaux for Coco Chanel in 1921 and is undisputedly the most iconic perfume in the world. Each campaign that accompanies the fragrance is considered an independent cinematic work of art. Guadagnino joins the likes of Baz Luhrmann, who was commissioned by Karl Lagerfeld to create it in 2004 #5 the movie starring Nicole Kidman, followed by The one I want with Gisele Bündchen ten years later.

Lagerfeld also worked with Luc Besson for the 1998 short film Le Loup, where model Estella Warren – dressed as Little Red Riding Hood – has an unforgettable encounter with a wolf. Ridley Scott was the director responsible for Chanel’s #5 campaign in 1986 monuments, what was referred to See you at 5 o’clock. (Scott captured French actress Carole Bouquet on her road trip through the American desert in the same red skirt costume that Robbie now wears.)

Matching soundtrack with Daft Punks Veridis Quo (The name of the song plays on the Latin phrase quo vadis which translates to “Where are you going?”), at a total of 140 seconds, See you at 5 o’clock is a “film of unprecedented length” for a Chanel No.5 campaign.
