Fort Worth – Competing against the top competition in the state of Texas at the ITA Texas Regional over the weekend, the UNT tennis team put together a solid performance highlighted by the combination of Gianna Pielet And Stadfany Nformi Reached the round of 16 in doubles.

Pielet and Nformi won each of their first two matches Friday, becoming the third UNT doubles pair in the last four years to reach at least the round of 16.

The Mean Green had strong performances overall in doubles, with all three teams winning at least one game in the tournament.

“It was a great test for us,” said head coach Amanda Stone said. “We had some outstanding wins this weekend in some major programs in both singles and doubles. Marina and Gianna have really shown great commitment and grit in their individuals to move forward and that is what we really strive for in our training. We saw some solid play-bys. “All of our doubles teams are at a point where we are on the verge of going to the next level. We have to continue to work hard and go into every game we play. We have to be able to show that focus and consistency. Once we master this habit, we will be hard to beat.”

The Pielet/Nformi combination proved formidable in the tournament, winning the opening round 8-5 against Sam Houston and an 8-1 victory over Texas Tech in the round of 32.

In addition to Pielet and Nformi, the double duo is from Lilly Schultz and Stanislava Shulzhneko also won their opening game 8-1 against Texas State Marina Adati And Lou Chalard teamed up to defeat SFA 8-6.

Marina Adati and Pielet highlighted the individual game for the Mean Green. Adati played in the qualifying round on Thursday and won her first round game in comeback style with 1:6, 6:2, 6:2 and then followed up with another exciting game with 6:4, 2:6, 7:6 [7-2] to secure their place in the main draw.

Lilly Schultz (5-7, 6-1, 6-3) and Lou Chalard (6-0, 6-1) also picked up victories in the first qualifying round games, but failed to get their second win to secure a spot in the main draw.

With only 64 players remaining in Friday’s main draw, Pielet was the only UNT singles player to earn a victory, advancing to the Round of 32 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Liubov Kostenko of Baylor moved in. The Texas A&M senior forfeited her next game to complete the competition for the Mean Green.

Overall, UNT posted a 9-10 record in the tournament, going 4-3 in doubles and 5-7 in singles.

North Texas returns to the courts Oct. 24-27 when it competes in the AAC Fall Championship in Houston.
