Game Freak confirms massive data breach, breaching employee information, source code and assets

Pokémon developer Game Freak was hacked, resulting in a massive data leak. This includes personal information and internal files relating to both existing and unannounced games.

Pokémon Black 2 and White 2

The Game Freak hack was discovered by numerous Pokémon-themed accounts over the weekend. According to Centro LEAKS, it contains “several gigabytes of information,” including the source code and beta builds for games like HeartGold/SoulSilver and Black 2/White 2.

As Eurogamer also reports, there are also details on some canceled and unannounced Pokémon projects, such as: B. a Splatoon-like multiplayer title, as well as information about “Ounce” (internal codename for Nintendo Switch 2), concept art, sprites and more assets.

Amid the leak reports, Game Freak released a statement dated October 10th. The company confirmed that personal data of 2,606 employees and contract workers had been leaked “related to unauthorized third-party access to our servers in August 2024.”

Game Freak promised to prevent further breaches by “strengthening our security measures.”

In 2020, there was a massive hack, also known as the “Nintendo Gigaleak,” which exposed internal data on various Pokémon games and other projects. In addition, around 300,000 user accounts were compromised, with hackers obtaining personal information such as email address, date of birth and nickname.
