Calico wallpaper makes gold with alchemy and enchantment

Since 2013, Calico wallpaper has presented the most beautiful and haunting murals on the market. Your new collection is created in collaboration with a kindergarten teacher and an early childhood teacher Janene Ping. Ping, who maintains a prolific practice of natural dyeing, aims to highlight the balance and beauty of nature. Through her thirty years as a teacher at the Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School, she has gained the insight and sensitivity necessary to inspire a love of the outdoors in our little ones. This collaboration includes two different collections: alchemy And enchantment.

Alchemy in Acacia

Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School is committed to providing children with the tools they need to become conscious citizens. Over the course of their time, they develop a personal relationship with nature and learn to actively participate in the local economy. Craft and artistry come first and are essential for humans to truly connect with the earth. Ping, a natural dyer extraordinaire, creates fantastic silk carpets for the Magical Puppet Tree Theater, which she founded in 1992. Through this joyful medium, she enriches a collection of imaginative stories that often remain untold.

Alchemy in Marigold

“The dyeing process reveals a journey in which the unpredictable magic of color unfolds each time the fibers are lifted from the brewing vessel,” notes Ping. “The revelation of unexpected hues is the most rewarding. It was a wonderful opportunity and journey to explore my work on a larger scale. It was magical to see it come to life.”

The alchemy The collection exemplifies what makes hand-dyeing so beautiful: transparent waves of organic colors splash across the silk, which are then transferred into these murals. The dye is saturated by different fibers at different rates, creating a blooming watercolor effect. Alchemy is available in seven color variants – vetiver, woad, turmeric, marigold, acacia, walnut and rosewood.

enchantment draws on the organic pauses and tonal changes we constantly find in nature. Amidst the undulating hues, one can almost see delicate landscapes that gently yield to their neighbors. Enchantment is also available in seven color variants – Logwood, Allium, Goldenrod, Bark, Neem, Rainbow and Hawthorn.

“I am grateful for the hands-on training and experiential learning that Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School has provided for my children and the other students in the community,” says Rachel Cope, Creative Director of Calico Wallpaper. “This inspired us to work with Janene to create Alchemy and Enchantment and provides us with an opportunity to give back to the organization that continues to support our children.”

Calico Wallpaper was born from the idea that art shouldn’t just live in a frame. Balancing background and foreground, texture, color and finish is a task with endless possibilities, ensuring that something new is always discovered. The limitless and beautiful, mesmerizing richness of a mural can add incredible depth and luxury to any room and at any age.
