4:30 p.m. – Peosta, Iowa – “Nature Squad” at the Peosta Branch of the Dubuque County Library District. Nature Squad brings the fun of nature to the library. The events offer hands-on nature-themed activities that inspire children’s love of nature and encourage them to explore the outdoors. This month participants will create nature journals.

6 to 7:30 p.m. – Platteville, Wisconsin – Mike Wiggins Jr. will present “Air, Land, Water and Fire in the Nest of the Thunderbirds” at the Harry & Laura Nohr Gallery in Ullsvik Hall, 1 University Plaza. The lecture highlights the conservation efforts of the Wisconsin Indigenous Peoples group. The event marks the 10th annual Indigenous Peoples Day Lecture at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Refreshments will be provided.

6 p.m. – Peosta, Iowa – “Papel Picado Craft Club” at the Dubuque County Library District Peosta Branch. From 8 years old. Discover the vibrant art of Papel Picado. You’ll learn to create stunning decorative banners by carefully cutting intricate patterns into colorful tissue paper. Unleash your creativity and add a festive touch to any celebration with these traditional Mexican crafts. It is recommended to register in advance, but drop-ins are also welcome as supplies last.

6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. – Lancaster, Wisconsin – “Adult Craft Night: Halloween Book Silhouettes” at Schreiner Memorial Library, 113 W. Elm St. Learn how to make Halloween decorations using vintage books and holiday-themed silhouettes produce. Bring a drink and a friend. Register via the library website.

4 to 5 p.m. – Platteville, Wisconsin – Science Fair at the Platteville Public Library, 225 W. Main St. For children ages 7 to 11. The event includes farming-themed activities such as making edible dirt cups and building an aquifer in a bottle and coloring. Held in collaboration with The Mining & Rollo Jamison Museums.

4:30 to 6:30 p.m. – Galena, Ill. – “Crochet Pumpkins” at the Galena Public Library District, 601 S. Bench St. For grades 7 through 12. Learn how to crochet decorative pumpkins. It is not necessary to be present all the time; Come and experience as much of the program as possible. Take-home materials and instructions are available for those unable to complete in person.

5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. – Platteville, Wisconsin – “Make It Midweek: Book Creature” at the Platteville Public Library, 225 W. Main St. Each month, participants try a new project they found on Pinterest. This month they transform an old book into a witch, fairy, vampire or other creature of their choice. Register via the library website.

6:30 to 7:30 p.m. – Lancaster, Wisconsin – “Beehive Life: Beekeeping Basics” at Schreiner Memorial Library, 113 W. Elm St. Tammi Droessler of Big River Organic will teach participants the basics of beekeeping and the hive. Register via the library website.

5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. – Dubuque – The Integrated Cancer Center’s Fourth Annual Trunk-or-Treat Event at Delhi Medical Center, 1500 Delhi St. This is a family-friendly, walk-in, indoor event. The event is hosted by the Integrated Cancer Center, a joint venture between Grand River Medical Group’s medical oncology clinic and UnityPoint Health-Wendt Regional Cancer Center’s radiation oncology services.

5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. – Elkader, Iowa – “Music Under the Moon at Motor Mill” at the Motor Mill Historic Site, 22984 Grain Road. Hear country and bluegrass music from Marques Morel and Simon Cropp at Motor Mill Stable. Popcorn and apple cider will be available at the event. Bring your own chairs and additional food and drinks. Free will donations are accepted. After the show, guests are encouraged to participate in a full moon forest hike led by a Clayton County naturalist. Explore the forest paths under the light of the full moon.

7 to 8:30 p.m. – Dubuque – “Music of Four Centuries” with classical guitarist Peter Fletcher at the Carnegie-Stout Public Library, 360 W. 11th St. Fletcher, a nationally touring and acclaimed guitarist, will perform a solo concert , which covers the entire spectrum from the Renaissance to the 20th century.

4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. – Farley, Iowa – “Kids Craft Club: Lanterns” at the Farley Branch of the Dubuque County Library District. The craft club offers monthly craft projects for children. This month, participants will make fall-themed tissue paper lanterns.

6-9 p.m. – Dyersville, Iowa – Game Night at Your Library at the James Kennedy Public Library, 320 First Ave. E. Participants should bring their favorite card games, board games, role-playing games or video games and meet, teach and play with others. Children under 7 years of age must be accompanied by a young person or adult.

6:30 p.m. – Maquoketa, Iowa – Jackson County Conservation will conduct a prescribed burn at Prairie Creek Recreation Area, 1215 E. Summit St. Participants can view a prescribed burn in the natural area and learn more about the burns, including techniques for safely conducting them on private property. Registration is required at least 48 hours in advance by calling 563-652-3787 or emailing [email protected].

7:00 p.m. – Dubuque – The University of Dubuque’s Department of Fine and Performing Arts presents a concert featuring UD’s concert and jazz bands at John and Alice Butler Hall in the Heritage Center, 2255 Bennett St. The concert will feature music from various Genres and eras include eras as well as timeless jazz standards.

9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. – Dubuque – Fall Cleanup Day at the Dubuque Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, 3800 Arboretum Drive. Lunch will be provided for participants. Register at tinyurl.com/DBQArboretumCleanUp.

10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. – Dubuque – “Lego Challenge” at the Carnegie-Stout Public Library, 360 W. 11th St. The library provides Lego bricks for you to build creative creations. Space is limited. The finished creations are then displayed in the library.

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Platteville, Wisconsin – Fall Plant Swap at the Platteville Public Library, 225 W. Main St. Has your flower garden produced extra bulbs or seeds that are looking for a new home? Do you have a collection of empty pots waiting to be given away? Bring plants, seeds, bulbs, hand trowels and any other planting tools you no longer want in your home and add some variety to your garden with new plants. Please label bulbs and seeds with the plant name.

10 a.m. – Maquoketa, Iowa – Halloween Party at the Maquoketa Public Library, 126 S. Second St. Join library staff for crafts, games, treats and a chance to win one of three grand prizes. Wear a costume if you want.

10 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Galena, Ill. – Belden School Open House on Heatherdowns Lane. Step back in time in the historic 1859 one-room limestone schoolhouse. This building was preserved to provide a glimpse into the past. Knowledgeable volunteer faculty will greet you with captivating stories about the school’s history and provide insights into the daily lives of the students who once occupied the school desks.

11 a.m. to noon – Platteville, Wisconsin – “FrankenToys for Kids” at the Platteville Public Library, 225 W. Main St. For children ages 6 to 12. Create your own spooky creatures by disassembling and reassembling stuffed animals, dolls and more. A library favorite that encourages creativity and imagination.

11 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Asbury, Iowa – Do Art Productions will be leading a comic art workshop at the Asbury Branch of the Dubuque County Library District. The interactive workshop is aimed at children aged 8 and over. Registration is required at dubcolib.org/event/comics-workshop.

1 to 2 p.m. – Platteville, Wisconsin – “FrankenToys for Teens” at the Platteville Public Library, 225 W. Main St. For children ages 12 to 18. Create your own crazy creatures by disassembling and reassembling stuffed animals, dolls and more. A library favorite that encourages creativity and imagination.

2 to 3 p.m. – Dubuque – Family Book Bingo at the Carnegie-Stout Public Library, 360 W. 11th St. For ages 4 and up. Hardcover and paperback books will be awarded as prizes. Registration is not required.

3 to 7 p.m. – Elizabeth, Ill. – Fright at the Fort at Apple River Fort State Historic Site, 311 E. Myrtle St. Attendees can attend a frontier burial, learn how to keep a witch out of their home, and the Experience the spirit of a Black Hawk war soldier, participate in a spooky scavenger hunt, enjoy spooky stories around the campfire and more. 7 p.m. – Dubuque – Dubuque Halloween Parade in downtown Dubuque. The parade begins at Sixth Street and Locust Street and ends at 15th Street and Locust Street. Food trucks will be available in the Washington Square area from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

1 to 4 p.m. – Dubuque – Dubuque Area History Expo at Steeple Square, 101 E. 15th St. The event will highlight the Dubuque area’s past through an exhibit hall, networking and presentations. Presentations include “Uncovering Dubuque’s Black Heritage” with Chris Happ Olson, deputy planner for the city of Dubuque, at 2 p.m. and “A City at Work 1912 and 2012” with artist Tim Olson at 3 p.m

2:00 p.m. – Galena, Ill. – Grace Episcopal Church, 107 S. Prospect St., will screen the documentary “The Philadelphia Eleven.” In 1974, a group of eleven women were ordained to the episcopal priesthood at a church in Philadelphia, in violation of the Episcopal Church’s constitution and canons, which at the time stated that only men were eligible for priestly ordination. This is the story told in The Philadelphia Eleven. The exclusion of women from ordination and other church leadership positions made headlines earlier this summer when the Southern Baptist Convention banned women from the highest leadership positions. In many parts of the Christian church, women continue to fight for full inclusion in the sacraments and leadership of the church.
