NFL Insider details how the disgruntled New York Jets star lost his agent

Earlier this week, CAA, one of the most respected talent agencies in sports and entertainment, decided to no longer represent New York Jets holdout pass rusher Haason Reddick.

It was a surprising move. NFL insider Ian Rapoport also said it “almost never happens.”

Agents and agencies rarely drop clients during negotiations. But when Rapoport spoke on NFL Network’s Insiders program Friday about the weeks leading up to the decision, he made it clear that the agency did everything it could to give Reddick advice.

And it wasn’t just his agent trying to get through to the 30-year-old two-time Pro Bowler.

“My understanding of the situation is that Haason Reddick has been given all sorts of advice,” he said. “His agents at CAA, two people close to him and his family worked for him. There was advice on how to try to get him to show up and stop paying fines.”

Rapoport made it clear that his agency was pushing to get Reddick to end the restraint. Reddick’s goal was to get the Jets to sign him to a multi-year contract extension when he was released by the Philadelphia Eagles in April.

It obviously didn’t work. He is the only remaining contract holdout in the NFL and every game he misses costs him money.

According to calculations by CBS Sports’ Joel Corry, who also happens to be a former player’s agent, Reddick may have already lost more than $9 million in lost money, including fines, bonuses and paychecks. For every game he doesn’t show up, he gives up almost $800,000 more.

It seemed the agency was at a point where it was hoping that Reddick would finally give in, report to the Jets, take what he could get contractually and use his on-field performance to make the kind of deal possible , which he wants in free agency offseason.

But the message isn’t getting through, and not just because Reddick isn’t listening.

“From what I understand, he’s basically stopped responding, stopped talking to anyone, and if the agents don’t get a call back at this point, if the advice is given and not followed, then what do we do?” Rapoport said.

Earlier this week, while discussing the firing of head coach Robert Saleh, Jets owner Woody Johnson made an impassioned plea for Reddick to come forward.

“When he arrives here he will find a very welcoming locker room where he will be able to fit in straight away. But he has to get here first,” Johnson said. “So, Haason, get in your car and drive down.” 95 and come to the New York Jets and we can meet you and escort you right in the building and you’ll fit right in. You will love it here and feel welcome. “We will achieve great things with us.”
