Week 5 of the NFL season ended with not one, but two prime-time gut punches against teams in the NFC South. The first to suffer a setback were the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who eluded almost certain victory in a Thursday night game against the Atlanta Falcons. Despite a Lavonte David interception that was returned to the Falcons’ 28-yard line after the two-minute warning, the Bucs failed to end the game, allowing one last attempt by the Falcons that resulted in a field Goal ended With just one second left, the game went into overtime and the Falcons set up a 45-yard touchdown that left the completely shell-shocked Tampa Bay team in a long and difficult mini-bye.

Last week was just as tough and much shorter for the New Orleans Saints. In a 26-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night, the Saints lost quarterback Derek Carr to an oblique injury and also lost their third straight game after starting the year brightly 2-0. To get back in the win column, the Saints are now turning to rookie Spencer Rattler, who will make his first NFL start after being selected in the fifth round by South Carolina.

With the Falcons taking control of the NFC South thanks to their Week 5 win, neither the Bucs nor the Saints can afford to lose this game and lose ground in the division. And for Tampa Bay, their task is significantly more difficult and their head is heavier: Due to Hurricane Milton, the Buccaneers had to evacuate the Tampa area and settle in New Orleans before the divisional showdown in the Superdome.
