We live in a time that ends on a hopeful note rather than a heartbreaking one

If you knew your time was limited, how would you spend it? That is the core question We live in timethat film lovers have been waiting for since Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh proved that they did it amazing chemistry at the 2023 Oscars. I intentionally use “heart” of the film instead of “center” because the film is so overwhelmingly rich in beauty and emotion that it is the only word that fits.

You’ll definitely want to bring tissues with you to the theater, because just like we all predicted, this is the case Love film is a river of tears. That’s exactly what happens in the end We live in time – and the impact of that final scene. If you haven’t seen the film yet, bookmark it and come back when your tears have dried.

What happens in We Live in Time?

A24

In We live in timeAlmut, a chef and former figure skater, and Tobias, a Weetabix cereal employee, unexpectedly cross paths when Almut literally runs him over with her car. All it takes is a single trip to the emergency room and dinner, followed by a visit to Almut’s restaurant, for the couple to fall in love. They embrace their newfound romance with reckless abandon, but their vision of the future comes to an abrupt end when Almut’s ovarian cancer returns.

Instead of using a typical narrative arc, the film actually begins with the diagnosis, surprising viewers almost as much as Tobias and Almut did. Jumping back and forth between their early relationship, starting a family, and life after diagnosis, the story highlights the beauty of both the dull and special moments of a life together – and is far more hopeful than heartbreaking. (It’s also pretty easy to keep up, thanks to the length of Florence Pugh’s hair in every scene.)

The couple’s relationship is characterized by indulging in quiet moments, such as when Almut shows Tobias the best way to crack an egg, or when, nine months pregnant, she eats an entire pack of Jaffa cakes in the bathtub. But these simpler moments are interspersed with partying and passion, and Almut, who would rather live for six incredible months than undergo chemotherapy and wait for an improvement that will never come, is determined to keep the momentum going.

She begins to lead a kind of double life by hiding her participation in a new cooking competition from Tobias and her cancer from her fellow chefs. (A moment of lightheartedness comes when Almut’s second catches her vomiting in the bathroom and asks if she’s on drugs.)

But while dedicating herself to a goal is understandable for many viewers, Almut’s driving force goes much deeper: she is afraid of being forgotten. When she forgets to pick up her daughter Ella during competition training and ends up arguing with Tobias, Almut reveals how afraid she is of just being “the cancer-stricken mother.” She wants to give Ella a different identity with which to remember her. So they move forward together and Finally Make it to the cooking competition – but despite all the work it took to get there, it’s not the beautiful dishes or the applause or overall success that makes the biggest impression.

Almut leaves the competition before it is over and instead goes to a nearby ice skating rink with her family. After leaving Tobias and Ella at one end of the rink, she waves and takes off, and it’s the last image we see of her – like an angel on ice skates.

When the film flashes back to the time after Almut’s implied death, we see Tobias teaching his daughter how to crack eggs, just as Almut showed him at the beginning of their relationship. And The is the part that made me cry. Instead of romanticizing death, We live in time romanticizes life in the truest sense of the word. It’s a reminder that the simple ways we honor our loved ones, the inescapable moments that are intertwined in our lives, are ultimately the most powerful. And the fact that memories mean we can live forever, no matter what.
