Apple’s Swift iPhone Update Fixes 4 Frustrating Issues

Apple has just released the latest update for the iPhone, iOS 18.0.1. This comes shortly after the general release of iOS 18 on September 16th, and shortly thereafter there was also a first-day update for iPhone 16 users, also called iOS 18.

But now we have the first real update. There are security issues – read what Forbes contributor Kate O’Flaherty has to say about them here – and, just as importantly, it fixes issues that arose in the general release. And it fixes them quickly: Weeks often pass between reporting a problem and the solution appearing, but here it was only a few days what was already known.

Note that I will evaluate the success of this version and consider whether you should install it shortly.

Which iPhones can run iOS 18.0.1?

This time, Apple maintained compatibility with all iPhones that could run last year’s software, iOS 17. That means any iPhone released in 2018 or later, from the iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max and iPhone Xr on up. It also includes iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max and all iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 series models, as well as second and third generation iPhone SE models.

Here’s how to get it

Unlike the first version of iOS 18, this is a much smaller file and should therefore install in no time. On my iPhone 16 Pro Max, it weighed 478.2MB and was on the iPhone less than five minutes after I hit download.

To get it, open the Settings app, select General, then Software Update. Next, click “Download and Install” and let the software do its work.

What is included in the publication?

Often Apple’s notes are sparse, simply saying that they are there to fix security issues, but this time we have no doubt that this update is far from just security-based.

First, it fixes a small but annoying issue where the display would become unresponsive when your thumb rested in certain positions on the iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Pro display. This issue was limited to the latest iPhone 16 versions. I’m happy to say that this issue was resolved on my first test.

Next, a camera issue was fixed. I never noticed this, but some iPhone 16 Pro users noticed that the camera could freeze under one specific situation: when shooting video in macro mode with the ultra-wide lens in 4K and HDR turned off.

Another very specific problem concerned the news. Some users found that if they shared a watch face with another iPhone user and that user responded, the iPhone would crash.

Finally, a performance issue due to memory allocation has been resolved.

So there are no new features – these will be available later this month when iOS 18.1 with Apple Intelligence launches – but useful fixes.
