CBFC has agreed to cuts for ’emergency’, certificate can be issued: Zee | Company news

Zee Entertainment Enterprises, co-producer of Kangana Ranaut’s film “Emergency”, told the Bombay High Court on Friday that it had agreed to the cuts suggested by the censor board.

Senior advocate Sharan Jagtiani, who represented Zee, said necessary cuts will be made and the film will be submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for issuance of its certificate.

Senior advocate Abhinav Chandrachud, appearing for the CBFC, said once the film is submitted after editing, it will be verified and a certificate will be issued in two weeks.

A division bench comprising Justices BP Colabawalla and Firdosh Pooniwalla accepted the statements and dismissed the petition filed by Zee Entertainment.

The court said it would issue a detailed order later.

“We sorted it out,” Jagtiani told the court.

The film, which was initially scheduled to release on September 6, was embroiled in a dispute with the censor board over not granting the CBFC certificate.

Last week, the CBFC told HC that the film could be released if certain cuts were made as decided by the board’s revision committee.

Earlier this week, the bench was informed by the censor board that Ranaut’s production house Manikarnika, co-producer of the film, had agreed to the cuts.

Co-producer Zee Entertainment had referred the HC search to the CBFC to issue a certificate for the film, which was directed by Ranaut, also a BJP MP from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh.

The biographical drama is facing controversy after Sikh organizations including the Shiromani Akali Dal objected, accusing it of misrepresenting the community and misrepresenting historical facts.

Zee Entertainment had alleged in its plea that the CBFC had already prepared the certificate for the film but was not issuing it.

Ranaut, who directed and co-produced the film and also plays the lead role of late former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, had accused the CBFC of delaying the certification of the film to delay its release.

Zee Entertainment had also claimed that the certificate was withheld due to political reasons and the upcoming elections in Haryana.

The bench had then wondered why the ruling party (BJP) would take action against Ranaut, who herself was a BJP MP.
