Pete Alonso’s home run and the Mets’ wild win came with great calls from Howie Rose

Howie Rose has recounted some of the most memorable Mets moments over the past three decades and added another memorable call to his contribution on Thursday night in Game 3 of the NL Wild Card Series.

While the game was being televised on ESPN, Rose could still be heard on ESPN New York radio station 880 when Pete Alonso hit the game-winning buzzer in the top of the ninth inning and Francisco Lindor hit the game-winning double play to send the Mets to the NLDS send.

“Swing and a fly ball to right field, hit pretty good,” Rose shouted during Alonso’s home run. “[Sal] Frelick back to the wall, he jumps, it’s gone! He did it! He did it! He did it! Pete Alonso with the most memorable home run of his career. He pumps his fist as he takes second, it’s a three-run home run. He gave the Mets a 3-2 lead!”

Rose ended the conversation: “Pete Alonso is keeping this fairytale season going with the fairytale momentum of his career.”

The Mets added one final run before the top of the ninth was over when Starling Marte hit an RBI single to drive in Jesse Winker for a 4-2 lead that was the final score.

The lifelong Mets fan then ended the game for good when Lindor hit a double play.

“Get out first!” First out! Put it in the books!” said Rose as part of his call for the final out.

The win sets up a showdown with the Phillies in the division series, marking the first time the two NL East rivals will face each other in the postseason.

The 2024 season has produced several surprising moments for the Mets, including two of the most memorable victories in franchise history in the same week after Lindor pushed the Mets into the postseason in Game 161 on Monday.
