What is Measure 1 on the North Dakota ballot?

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – On November 5, voters in North Dakota will vote on several ballot measures. Three of these are constitutional measures and two are initiated measures.

Measure 1 on the ballot aims to change language that has been enshrined in the North Dakota Constitution for decades.

The measure would update language describing three state institutions:

The first will convert the Devils Lake State School for the Deaf and Dumb into the State School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

The second language change changes the “State Hospital for the Insane in Jamestown” to the “State Hospital for the Care of Individuals With Mental Illness.”

The third language change changes the language from “The Institution for the Feebleminded in Grafton, to Facility for Individuals With Developmental Disabilities.”

“It’s definitely time, it’s high time that we should have done this and I hope that this doesn’t meet with resistance because it doesn’t change the substance, it brings the people who are disconnected from it “More dignity for these organizations,” said Representative Jon Nelson, 14th District.

The constitutional measure change would have very little impact on taxpayer dollars.

“It would be very minimal, just on some documents that might have to go through some reordered titles,” Nelson said.
