Fever reveals the moment Caitlin Clark was named WNBA Rookie of the Year: ‘The best is yet to come’

The writing was on the wall, but when Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark got the call to become the 2024 WNBA Freshman of the Year, her teammates immediately celebrated with her – a moment the team will never forget.

Clark’s nomination as Rookie of the Year was officially announced Thursday after her outstanding inaugural campaign at the W, but she learned of the prestigious award that was in store for her after commissioner Kathy Engelbert said against Fever head coach Christie during a practice before a playoff game Sides called the Connecticut Sun.

“We have someone who wants to say a few things real quick,” Sides told the Fever during practice.

“Hello, Coach Sides, this is WNBA Commissioner Kathy Engelbert. Do we all have the team together?” Engelbert replied. “All right, I know you’re in Connecticut. Good luck in the playoff game tomorrow and is Caitlin Clark in the room?”

Engelbert then praised Clark and the rest of the team before saying what everyone would expect on the call.

“Caitlin, it feels like yesterday when I brought your name up as the number one pick in this year’s draft,” Engelbert explained. “It was your first time wearing the Indiana Fever jersey and what a record-breaking season for you and the entire team full of outstanding performances. I know you all put in the hard work and dedication and it paid off with your playoffs, etc. “I know the best is yet to come.

“So, congratulations, Caitlin. You are the 2024 Kia ​​WNBA Rookie of the Year!”

Clark tried to remain serious throughout the conversation, but only responded with “facts” when Engelbert said, “I know the best is yet to come.”

But when she said Clark was the WNBA rookie of the year, the No. 1 pick was mobbed by her teammates, all of whom jumped up and down with joy.

After a storied career at Iowa that led to her breaking the NCAA all-time records in both men’s and women’s basketball, Clark excelled in her rookie season with 19.2 points per game and 8.4 assists, leading the WNBA on.

She set numerous records throughout the season, including the most points and three-pointers by a rookie in league history, while also becoming the first rookie to record a triple-double. Clark had 334 assists, which was not only the most of any rookie in league history, but also the most of any player in a single season.

When the votes were counted, Clark had 66 of 67 first-place votes for Rookie of the Year, while Chicago Sky star Angel Reese, who was speculated to have given Clark the closest competition for the award, had one vote for the received first place.

Unfortunately for Clark and the Fever, their season ended during the playoff series with the Sun.

But after this season, there is more than enough for Clark and the Fever to build on that will remain in the record books as their WNBA career is off to a fast start and can now pack some serious hardware in the trophy case.
