Alec Baldwin’s controversial “Rust” film has a premiere date: Buzz

Alec Baldwin’s controversial “Rust” film is finally having its world premiere, nearly three years after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot on set in New Mexico.

“Rust” will debut at EnergaCAMERIMAGE, a film festival also known as Camerimage, taking place November 16-23 in Poland. According to Rolling Stone, the event will also feature a panel discussion with writer-director Joel Souza, cinematographer Bianca Cline (who took on Hutchins’ role in completing the project), and Stephen Lighthill, Hutchins’ mentor at her film school, AFI.

“In the panel discussion following the screening of ‘Rust,’ the filmmakers will discuss the events surrounding the film and provide insights into further production after Halyna’s death. “It was really important to the filmmakers to uphold Hutchins’ artistic vision, as enormously challenging as it was for the entire crew, in the hope of fulfilling their duty to complete their work,” the festival said. “During the panel, they will discuss the unique visual style Halyna developed on set and explain how Bianca Cline, who took over her work, managed to remarkably reproduce Halyna’s style. Thanks to Cline’s skill, the camera work remains consistent throughout the film.”

“Rust” focuses on a teenager (Patrick Scott McDermott) who, after the death of his parents in 1880s Wyoming, is left to fend for himself with his younger brother and, after his conviction, with his Grandfather (Baldwin), with whom he has long been estranged, is on the run for the accidental killing of a local rancher.

Filming in New Mexico was halted when a gun Baldwin was holding exploded on October 21, 2021, killing Hutchins and injuring Souza. Movie armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was sentenced to 18 months in prison for her role in the tragic accident; A manslaughter charge against Baldwin was dismissed earlier this year.

Production on “Rust” wrapped last year at the Yellowstone Film Ranch in Montana with Cline as the new cinematographer. Hutchins’ widower, Matthew Hutchins, also joined the project as a new executive producer.

“Rust” will be widely released following its festival premiere. An accompanying documentary detailing the film’s completion and celebrating Hutchins’ life is also expected to be released.
