Andrew Garfield wants to return as Spider-Man “if there’s a great concept,” which probably means it will happen at some point

After Spider-Man: No Way Home successfully brought its Spider-Man back for a Multiversal event, is there a future for more Andrew Garfield under the webslinger’s mask? He’s definitely open to the idea.

The Esquire article on the actor (which is a fantastic read) explores his past, present and future. Of course, that almost Peter Parker’s career-defining role in the two Amazing Spider-Man films is mentioned again and again, and that includes his surprise role in the Tom Holland-directed threequel, which was a huge success in late 2021 and early 2022. Would he return as? Spider-Man for another adventure? He’s 100% willing to do it, but under the right circumstances.

Garfield admits that Sony Pictures’ “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” in 2014, which turned out to be his final “solo” outing as Spider-Man, didn’t turn out the way he wanted, especially after being so faced intense criticism the moment he signed on to play the iconic Marvel character. Although the film was by no means a box office disaster, Sony and Marvel began to pursue a new vision that included the inclusion of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“It was really healing for me,” the actor admitted of returning to his Spidey role following the cancellation of The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and Tom Holland reprising the role in a rebooted continuity set within the larger MCU took over. Additionally, Garfield’s role in No Way Home wasn’t a simple little cameo, as he was given some closure and plenty of moments of joy following Gwen Stacy’s death in TASM2. In the end, it became abundantly clear that people loved his take on Spider-Man, even if the films he had previously appeared in weren’t very good.

As for donning the suit in the future if the call comes, he said this: “I would definitely 100 percent come back if it was the right thing, if it added value to the culture, if there was a great concept or something something.” This has never been done before, it’s unique and strange and exciting and something you can immerse yourself in… I love this character and he’s a joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I’m happy about that too. “Even though the fourth Spider-Man film set in the MCU could have multiversal elements again, both Garfield and Tobey Maguire seem to be sitting this film out. I think he could show up in Avengers: Secret Wars.

Next up for Peter Parker is Marvel Animation and Marvel Studios’ “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” series, as well as Sony Pictures’ fourth Spider-Man film, scheduled to begin filming next year and directed by Shang will lead. Chi’s fate Daniel Cretton.
