  • Daniel Day-Lewis will appear in a film for the first time since 2017.
  • He co-wrote “Anemone” with his son Ronan, who also directs.
  • Sean Bean, Samantha Morton and Samuel Bottomley star.

With three Oscars under his belt and a long, successful career, Daniel Day-Lewis could well be forgiven for spending the rest of his days on other pursuits.

And in fact, it seemed like he was going to do just that, as he hasn’t been seen on screen since 2017’s Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread.

But when Day-Lewis was discovered by British tabloids, who were apparently on location filming a new film, interest naturally peaked. Was he really back? Would it be a cameo?

Now we have confirmation from Focus Features, which is backing the new film titled Anemone along with production company Plan B.

But this isn’t just any film – it’s the directorial debut of Day-Lewis’ son Ronan Day-Lewis, and Daniel co-wrote the screenplay with his son.

What is the story of “Anemone”?

There aren’t many official details yet, but the plot “explores the complicated relationships between fathers, sons and brothers and the dynamics of familial bonds.”

Focus Features Chairman Peter Kujawski shared his excitement in a statement:

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with Ronan Day-Lewis on his first feature film with a brilliant visual artist, along with Daniel Day-Lewis as his creative collaborator. They have written a truly exceptional script and we look forward to working with the Plan B team to bring their shared vision to audiences.”

Ronan Day-Lewis is currently known more as an artist than a filmmaker, although he did create the 2018 short film “The Sheep and the Wolf” and the Sargasso music video “Snow and Sun.” He is known for his paintings, which have been featured in several public exhibitions in recent years.

Who else stars in “Anemone”?

The cast also includes Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley and Safia Oakley-Green. Day-Lewis was spotted filming with Bean this week, which is likely why the statement was released. We’re pretty sure everyone involved would have wanted to wait until the first trailer.

Regarding the crew, the film features cinematographer Ben Fordesman, costume designer Jane Petrie and production designer Chris Oddy.

Does this mean Daniel Day-Lewis is officially back?

That remains to be seen at this point – while Day-Lewis is clearly happy to be working with his son, he has expressed little interest in returning to work on a more regular basis otherwise.

But who knows? Maybe this little taste will make him want to act more often again. Either that or he disappears back into the off-screen world, much like Gene Hackman.

When will “Anemone” be released in cinemas?

While filming is still underway, there’s no indication as to when Anemone will hit the screens, but if it goes well, it’s entirely possible the film could end up at the awards circuit in 2025.
